Boy drowns on Carnival cruise
A six-year-old boy has drowned on board a Carnival Cruise Line ship.
The boy, from Florida, was at the pool with his family on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise on Carnival Victory.
According to reports in the US press, a DJ discovered the boy struggling in the water and immediately stopped the music.
Other passengers then jumped into the pool and pulled the boy out and tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
In a statement the cruise line said: "Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time.
"The company’s CareTeam is providing assistance and support."
The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the incident but said it appears to be accidental.
In a statement, it said the boy was with his 10-year-old brother at the time.
Carnival told CNN it does not have lifeguards on duty at its pools, and parental supervision is required for children under 13.
A spokeswoman added that there was a parent present at the time of the incident.
