Brisbane Airport has started a landmark trial of facial recognition technology which it says can transform the future of travel.
The airport has teamed up with Air new Zealand and aviation tech provider SITA to introduce SITA Smart Path.
It uses advanced biometrics for passengers to present their details at a self-service check-in kiosk then via an automated boarding gate using face recognition verification to access their flight.
Brisbane is the first Australian airport to trial the system.
Using SITA Smart Path, travel documents are linked to the biometric data at check-in, allowing passengers to complete the boarding process without showing a boarding pass or passport again.
Air New Zealand passengers get the opportunity to test the tech first and will be expanded to more international airlines in the coming months.
"This is a great opportunity for passengers to help shape the future of travel. We’re always striving to improve the airport experience at Brisbane Airport and this trial will allow us to test and refine new technology that we hope will make standard check-in and boarding processes more efficient and secure," said Roel Hellemons, general manager strategic planning and development for Brisbane Airport Corporation.
"A key benefit of working with SITA is its technology integrates with our existing common-use infrastructure – check-in kiosks and boarding gates – and can be used by any airline that operates on a common-use kiosk."
The Smart Path system can be expanded to use throughout the airport for any procedures that require the presentation of travel documents and ID checks.
Brisbane Airport and SITA will collaborate to expand the technology for use in other relevant areas.
