The UK’s first beach hut resort is due to open on the North East coast by Easter 2010.
The project will see 21 huts built in Whitley Bay with direct beach access.
They will sleep four to six people, with a separate bedroom, fitted kitchen, bathroom, sitting area and 24-hour concierge service.
Rental for each hut will be between £300 and £450 a week depending upon the season. They will be available 11 months of the year.
The Dukes Walk Beach Hut Resort in North Tyneside is subject to planning permission.
There are also plans for an art gallery using adjacent vacant space behind a cafe.
The beach hut resort has been designed by Newcastle upon Tyne-based Kensington and Partners.
Lead architect Keith Eland said:“One of the key design challenges was to provide accommodation for family holidays while maintaining the traditional English beach hut look.
“We achieved this by combining two units together with a glass break giving maximum internal space but keeping the traditional rhythm associated with a row of beach huts.
“This gave us space for a large living area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with all the facilities you would expect in an apart-hotel.”
Beach Hut Resorts financial director Darren Baker said: “Our beach hut development will allow holidaymakers to step out of their front door directly onto the sand.
“Families can enjoy the beach and coastline as well as exploring other parts of the region. Hadrian’s Wall, Holy Island, Northumberland and Newcastle-Gateshead are all on the doorstep. This development is about providing a place where people can enjoy a traditional English family holiday.”
