UK: Research suggests 42 per cent of us will head for Europe this year
New research suggests the average British person will spend around £1,081 on a summer holiday this year – even if they do not go abroad.
According to a survey for the credit card provider Morgan Stanley, some 42 per cent of holidaymakers will head for Europe, 34 per cent will stay in the UK, and 16 per cent of the 2,300 questioned are not planning a holiday at all. The average spend of £1,081, however, relates to a booking for more than one person – costs per person average £459.
Tyrell Schmidt, of Morgan Stanley, said: “Although many cost-conscious Britons are sticking to the UK for their summer holiday, people are still spending significant amounts of money, especially if they are going abroad in search of summer sun.”
Meanwhile, Thomas Cook has reported a surge in bookings over the last few days after a general reverse of 10 per cent this year; spokesman Andrew Wallace told the Daily Mail: “We experienced a drop along with the rest of the industry, but things are picking up. People are still very much choosing to take holidays abroad.”
