Staff spend more than an hour a week surfing holiday websites at work and a total of 75 days per year on non-job related Internet “research”, according to Thomas Cook.

A survey revealed that far from being over-worked, as most surveys suggest, we spend two hours per week emailing friends, 71 minutes on instant messaging, 68 minutes on auction sites, 66 minutes researching travel, and 54 minutes shopping online for clothes.

Thomascook.com director Carol Dray said: “Businesses will be very surprised at the results of the research. Most would assume that their people occasionally surf the net for non-work related purposes, but not to this extent.”
