Brits on holiday in Spain told to get home as hotels ordered to close

The Foreign Office is telling Brits in Spain who want to get back to the UK to start making plans now.

It comes after the Spanish government ordered hotels and short-stay accommodation, such as short-stay campsites or caravan parks, to close by Tuesday (March 24). The FCO said it didn’t believe the measures applied to long-term accommodation.

They are part of the State of Emergency called on March 14 which puts tight restrictions on movement throughout the country.

Similar measures have been put into place in other European countries, including France and Italy, and are expected to be implemented in the UK soon.

On Wednesday, the FCO advised against all but essential travel from the UK, which means that Brits on holiday overseas will not be covered by their travel insurance.

Ryanair said it would help with the repatriation effort but said from March 24 it would stop most, if not all, of its flights.
