Broadway theaters will stay closed until end of spring 2021

The bright lights of Broadway will stay dark until at least next spring.

Broadway’s 41 theaters, a major tourism draw for New York City, will remain closed until 30 May next year, trade group the Broadway League said.

It said ticket sales for shows would be suspended until then but many shows could be suspended for even longer.

"Certainly a lot of shows are making their plans, and some think we will open in the summer, and I hope they are right. But I think people’s bets are the fall of next year," said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League.

"Dates for each returning and new Broadway show will be announced as individual productions determine the performance schedules for their respective shows," the organization said.

Broadway theaters closed on 12 March as New York City became the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak in the US.

It is a huge money spinner for NYC tourism, drawing 14.6 million theatergoers last year with ticket sales of $1.8 billion.

Covid-19 has badly affected the wider performing arts industry with the Metropolitan Opera suspending performances until next September, and Cirque du Soleil among companies filing for bankruptcy.
