Budapest airport launches massive expansion with a new terminal
With Budapest airport likely to welcome for the first time in its history 20 million passengers in 2026, expansion is becoming a necessity to cope with a traffic which could see some 40 million passengers in the early 2040s.
During a ceremony attended by various personalities from the world of politics and economics- including the Hungarian Prime Minister, the foundation stone was laid for a new terminal at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The ceremony officially marked the launch of an ambitious expansion and modernization program.
The milestone follows a 35% increase in traffic since French company VINCI Airports (20% stake into the airport) assumed operations through a joint investment with the Hungarian state. The large-scale development is designed to meet rising air traffic demand and deliver world-class facilities tailored to the evolving needs of travelers.
Backed by a total investment of €1 billion over the next decade, the project ranks among the most significant airport infrastructure programs in Central Europe.

The expansion includes:

  • A new 35,000-square-meter main terminal featuring centralized check-in facilities, optimized security screening areas, and integrated retail and commercial spaces to create a smoother passenger experience.

  • A new 19,000m² passenger pier, along with the expansion of aircraft apron areas by 132,000 m², adding 13 new aircraft stands and a dedicated de-icing facility.

  • Renovation of parking facilities, upgrades to internal and external roadways, and improved curbside access aligned with the new centralized terminal building.

In September, the government also announced major upgrades to airport connectivity, including plans for a direct rail link and the refurbishment and widening of the airport expressway.

Modernization of Budapest current terminal

Meanwhile, targeted upgrades to Terminal 2 are already underway to ensure operational continuity until the new terminal opens. These improvements include reconfiguring the check-in hall to add space and counters, modernizing security lanes with advanced screening systems, repositioning automated gates, and creating a dedicated lane for passengers with reduced mobility, families, and Fast Track users. The Pier B area will also be expanded to increase capacity for non-Schengen arrivals.

During the ceremony, Nicolas Notebaert, President of VINCI Concessions and VINCI Airports, underscored the significance of the project, stating that the expansion reflects growing international interest in Hungary and Budapest, as well as a rising propensity among Hungarians to travel. He emphasized the commitment to delivering a modern, world-class gateway prepared to meet future demand. The new terminal should welcome its first passengers in 2035.
