Friday is expected to be the busiest day ever for British airspace as families jet off on half-term holidays.
Air-traffic service provider NATS said the record of 8,854 movements, set on the corresponding day in 2018, is likely to be broken tomorrow.
It is expecting one aircraft will enter the skies every 10 seconds.
NATS head of service performance Wendy Howard-Allen told the Independent that schools breaking up tomorrow, just ahead of the bank holiday weekend, will create additional demand on what is usually the busiest day of the week.
She said that it’s possible aircraft movements could exceed 9,000, if not tomorrow then on May 31 when airlines are putting on an extra 300 flights for Liverpool and Tottenham fans travelling to the Champion’s League Final in Madrid.
The busiest areas will be over Dover and Clacton as many aircraft fly passengers south towards the Mediterranean.
