Calls for Peninsular Malaysia – Borneo ferry service to boost tourism
The Malaysian federal government is being urged to consider a cruise ferry service linking Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo to boost tourism.
The issue was discussed in length during the Sabah Community Based Tourism Fair in Putrajaya.
Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said there needs to be another option than just air travel to increase accessibility.
“A cruise ferry service between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo could be a strategic initiative as a viable alternative, especially with rising airfares.”
“Perhaps the Federal Government could consider establishing a cruise ferry service, similar to the Feri Muhibbah introduced in the 1980s,” Joniston added.
The Sabah Community Based Tourism Fair is being held for the first time outside of Sabah and runs until October 20.
