Canada’s fastest-growing destination
Agents and tour operators might want to consider selling Canada’s fastest-growing tourism destination, Newfoundland and Labrador, says Charlotte Jewczyk, manager of market development/travel trade.
“We have a lot of promotional material to give travel agents, and we do joint marketing with key tour operators,” she told TravelMole.
The region has seen a 37% increase in visitors in the past five years. And it’s become more accessible recently as Continental Air started non-stop flights from Newark to St. Johns International Airport.
New properties in the area include St. John’s the Spa at the Monastery, the largest day spa in Atlantic Canada.
New tours include the opening of Newman’s Wine Vaults Provincial Historic Site, and production tours of the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company.
The area has a long list of “unique selling points,” including:
• Two UN World Heritage Sites.
• Ten-thousand-year-old icebergs.
• The largest population of humpback whales in the world.
• The largest Atlantic Puffin sanctuary in North America.
• The area is also becoming an international cruise destination with over 22 ports of call.
“A key market for us is Canada. We market mostly to the northeastern seaboard, but also do some niche marketing in the outdoor adventure market – the high end,” said Ms Jewczyk.
The busiest time of the year is from May to July, but the west coast of Newfoundland also has some of the best winter skiing in the area. Such winter sports as snow mobiling are also popular, according to Ms Jewczyk.
“We’re expanding our winter market,” she said.
