Canberra event in jeopardy

Wednesday, 07 Aug, 2006 0

The head of tourism in the ACT says the Rally of Canberra event will not continue if a major sponsor is not found in the next six weeks.

The motorsport event previously had sponsorship worth more than $300,000 from Subaru to help pay for staging it in Canberra’s forests.

The ACT Government has said it is not willing to cover all the costs in 2007 if a major backer cannot be found.

Ross McDiarmid from Capital Tourism says the future of the rally is hanging in the balance.

“We’ve got at least expressions of interest out there which we will be pursuing, and we’re sort of hopeful that between now and the middle of September that we’ll find a sponsor,” he said.
