Cancun is the latest destination offering inducements to attract wary travelers back.
The beach city plans to officially reopen to tourism this month with a host of giveaway incentives.
Launching on June 15, about 200 tourism suppliers are involved in the ‘2+2’ offer campaign which sees hotels offering two nights free for every two nights booked, or a free stay for two children.
It extends to car rental, and according to local media, will also be valid for various golf and spa packages and theme park entry.
"It’s designed to reactivate vacations to our destinations after the crisis caused by Covid-19," said Roberto Cintron, President of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotels Association.
Cintron hopes the city’s hotels will be at least half-full by July and August.
About three-quarters of the firms involved are hotels, such as Atelier de Hoteles.
"In the face of this atypical situation, we had to react to maintain our spectacular destinations in the forefront of tourists’ minds," said Oliver Reinhart, CEO of luxury all-inclusive operator Atelier de Hoteles.
The campaign also comprises a competition with free recurring vacations up for grabs under the hashtag #Come2MexicanCaribbean.
It states: "Enter for a chance to win a vacation for life in any of the Mexican Caribbean destinations. Starting June 2020."
