Cape Town focuses on sustainable development
Maximising socio-economic benefits for local communities from tourism ventures while still maintaining the quality of the environment, is the major challenge facing all stakeholders in the tourism industry says The Western Cape Tourism Board.
The City of Cape Town is preparing for its forthcoming ‘Responsible Tourism in Destinations’ conference being held in the Mother City from August 21-23, just before the World Summit which starts in Johannesburg on August 26.
The Western Cape Tourism Board says it plans to take the mountain – Table Mountain – to the Summit in the form of a dramatic exhibition aimed at attracting global partnerships for future sustainable development in Cape Town. The city will also be launching The Cape Town Earth Festival, which will kick off on August 10, as well as the Cape Care Route – A Trail of Two Cities.
The tourism board says tourism is the Western Cape economy’s fastest growing sector, but the province has realised that unless responsibly developed, tourism could also contribute towards environmental degradation and cultural decay.
“Responsible tourism is the key guiding principle for tourism development in South Africa. It is an absolute necessity if we are to emerge as a successful international competitor,” said Monica Graaf, coordinator of the City of Cape Town’s involvement in the World Summit.
