RV holiday are having a renaissance right now with demand increasingly on the rise following the pandemic, with many travellers wishing to explore a destination within their own travel bubble.

In response to this increasing demand Capital Region USA has joined forces with Vacations to America to create the new Great American Road Trip, giving holidaymakers the opportunity to experience the wide-open spaces and remote places across the region.

The newly launched Great American Road Trip is set to join iconic US road trips including Route 66 and Highway 1 as the US holiday experience everyone needs to take.

Hop in an RV and hit the road to experience Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC on this 14-day trip across the region.

Scott Balyo, Executive Director, Capital Region USA said "Our diverse region has everything a traveller could want from their next holiday, from the monuments, museums and neighbourhoods of Washington, DC and it’s wealth of history to the national and state parks preserving the wide-open spaces of the Appalachian Mountains and Atlantic coastline in Virginia and Maryland."

"We created this new RV road trip holiday with the post-pandemic traveller in mind and used the consumer insights from Vacations to America to create the perfect trip."

Richard Wimms, MD, Vacations to America said "We’ve seen a rise in enquiries for adventurous holidays to wide open spaces, which the US offers in abundance. This is why we have partnered with Capital Region USA to create the new 14-day RV trip across the region."

The 14-night trip starts with two nights at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in Washington, DC. The city is known as one of the greenest on the East Coast and provides plenty of space for travellers to experience the famous landmarks and museums as well as unique outdoor spaces without getting caught in the crowds.

From the free Smithsonian museums including the National Museum of Natural History and National Portrait Gallery (all operating free timed ticket entry) and the monuments and memorials on the National Mall to the vibrant neighbourhoods including those along the waterfronts, there is plenty to keep visitors occupied.

After two nights in the city, it is time to hit the road and make the RV your home for the next 11 nights. The suggested itinerary starts in Manassas, Virginia to collect the RV before driving to the first overnight stop in Rocky Gap State Park where travellers will be surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.

Moving onwards to Gambrill State Park on the ridge of the Catoctin Mountains in Frederick County, Maryland, the park has breath-taking mountain views and miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails to enjoy. The fourth stop on this circular route takes RV’ers to Elk Neck State Park which is situated on the peninsula of the famous Chesapeake Bay and home to the historic Turkey Point Lighthouse.

Assateague Island National Seashore is a national park famous for its herds of wild horses; pitch up for the next night at the adjacent Assateague Island State Park. First Landing State Park on Cape Henry in North Virginia Beach is the perfect place to camp away from the crowds but still experience the excitement of Virginia Beach.

At the next camping spot of Chickahominy Riverfront Park cycling enthusiasts can cycle the 52-mile Virginia Capital Trail between Richmond and Williamsburg while those who prefer a slower pace of life can enjoy the park’s namesake river and lit fishing pier.

The penultimate RV spot is Douthat State Park which opened in 1939, and as one of Virginia’s original six state parks is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are over 43 miles of hiking trails to tackle and a 50-acre lake with sandy swimming beach to enjoy.

No Great American Road Trip is complete without visiting Virginia’s famous Shenandoah National Park and driving the 105-mile-long Skyline Drive scenic byway. There are several overlooks and parking spots along the byway which allow RV’ers to look at the views of the Shenandoah Valley. The national park is over 200,000 acres of protected land and a haven for wildlife including deer, birds, and black bears.

The 14-night Great American Road Trip costs from £1,698 per person based on four sharing. The price includes return flights, two nights’ accommodation at Kimpton Hotel Palomar, 11-days Cruise America RV rental, guide maps and directions.
