Carnival Corp testing electric battery powered ships

Carnival Corp wants to put its recent pollution problems behind it.
It selected German based brand AIDA to pilot electrical energy from shipboard battery storage systems.
AIDA Cruises inked an agreement with Corvus Energy for a trial that begins next year.
The green initiative will test the lithium-ion battery storage systems for an extended period of time for emission-free cruising as well as powering the ships’ onboard energy needs.
It will then be expanded to Italian sister brand Costa Cruises.
"Our goal is to reach emission-neutral ship operation. The electrification of our ships is another important step on this path," says Michael Thamm, CEO of Costa Group and Carnival Asia.
AIDA becomes the first to launch a battery storage system on a cruise ship of this size.
Last year AIDA Cruises began operating the first large cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas.
