Carnival Corp to build new Japanese cruise terminal
Carnival Corp has sealed a long term strategic agreement with the Japanese port city of Sasebo to construct a new cruise terminal.
The new terminal will be operational by 2020 and the partnership will give Carnival cruise brands priority berthing rights at the terminal.
Tokyo hosts the summer Olympic Games in 2020.
The strategic partnership was unveiled last week by cruise executives, local government and Japan’s ministry of land, infrastructure transportation and tourism.
Carnival has invested quite heavily in public-private Japanese port development projects and may continue to do so to keep up with demand.
"Through our long-term investment in the port of Sasebo, and hopefully additional Japanese ports, we hope to facilitate the rising demand for travel in this important region," said Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Group Asia.
"We also believe that there is significant potential in collaborating with the government to develop certain Japanese ports into turnaround ports to promote more fly-and-cruise packages."
Carnival brands account for about 1.8m passengers in the Japan market, serving 45 ports.
