Carnival Corp’s social impact brand Fathom will effectively cease operating as a cruise line in its own right from next summer.
Fathom’s single ship the 700-passenger Adonia will return to UK based P&O Cruises.
Fathom currently offers cruises to the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
However its social impact ‘voluntourism’ concept will continue.
Fathom will continue to operate social impact shore excursions in the Dominican Republic via other Carnival Corp.-owned brands, Carnival Corp. spokesman Roger Frizzell told USA TODAY.
They may also be expanded to other destinations, he said.
Fathom’s Cuba sailings were ‘extremely successful’ Frizzell said and Carnival hopes to continue sailing there on other lines.
It has already applied for approval from Cuban authorities to operate sailings on other brands from next summer.
"We are committed to Cuba for the long term, especially based on the success we’ve had in Cuba with Fathom," Frizzell said.
Fathom is currently the only line permitted to sail from the US to Cuba.
Other cruise lines including Norwegian and Royal Caribbean plan to start sailings pending Cuban authorization.
