Carnival cracks down on carry-on booze
Carnival Cruise Line is cracking down on guests bringng bottled beverages on board in an effort to cut down on the amount of smuggled booze in luggage.
Starting July 9, the cruise line said passengers will not be permitted to bring bottled drinks onboard other than a single bottle of wine or champagne per passenger.
Unopened drinks contained in cartons or cans such as water or juice will still be allowed but limited to a 12-pack placed in carry-on luggage only.
Carnival says the policy change is to cut down on lengthy delays during embarkation as security guards checked individual bottles to see if any contained alcohol.
It also said some ‘behavorial issues’ and safety incidents can be traced back to smuggled booze.
"This is something that we’ve been grappling with for quite some time. The main goal is to try to ensure safety for our guests and to decrease the likelihood of a security incident that’s tied to smuggled alcohol," said spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz.
The cruise line has softened the blow by offering reduced prices on bottled water at $2.99 for 12 bottles, when ordered in advance.
