Carnival ship catches fire in St Thomas
No injuries were reported after a Carnival cruise ship caught fire yesterday sparking a response from the US Coastguard and the evacuation of all passengers and crew onto dry land.
The Carnival Liberty was docked at St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, when an engine room fire broke out.
It was put out by the ship’s automatic fire extinguishing system and an investigation as to the cause of the fire is under way, Carnival said in a statement.
The ship was carrying more than 3,000 guests and on the second day of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed from San Juan.
Passengers were allowed back aboard the ship late Monday, Carnival said, and a technical assessment of the engine room will be made by early Tuesday before the ship is cleared to sail again.
