Carnival to ban smoking on balconies
From this fall, Carnival cruise passengers will no longer be able to light up on cabin balconies.
"In response to the preferences of a majority of our guests," the balcony smoking ban comes into effect on October 9, Carnival said.
Smoking inside rooms is already outlawed, and smokers will still be able to get a nicotine fix in designated smoking areas on open decks, in night clubs and in certain areas of casino bars.
Passengers who break the new rule be required to pay a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee.
With this change, Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line are the only mainstream cruise lines that still permit smoking on cabin balconies.
Also Carnival announced it will increase gratuities from $11.50 a day to $12.00 per day for all sailings beginning October 9.
In a letter sent to travel agents the cruise line said guests who have prepaid gratuities will not be affected.
