Cathay flight makes emergency landing due to engine failure
A Cathay Pacific flight from Perth to Hong Kong had to make an unscheduled emergency landing in Bali after the plane’s engines reportedly caught fire and cut out.
The mid-air scare happened following a ‘hell of a bang’ according to one passenger.
Cathay Pacific flight CX170 landed safely in Bali with the airline denying an engine fire had broken out.
"We can confirm that what witnesses saw was a light due to the engine failure, not a real fire", Cathay said in a statement.
"Safety remains Cathay Pacific’s highest priority."
Passenger Joel Sirna gave a differing account of the incident.
"Mid-flight, we heard a loud bang and the plane started to shake. There were a few screams," Sirna said.
"All the lights went out and I looked out the window and saw some flames and sparks — the wing and the motor were on fire," he said.
All passengers were accommodated in local hotels or flew on to Hong Kong on alternative flights.
Cathay Pacific is investigating the defect with assistance from engine maker Rolls Royce.
