Cayman Islands to monitor travelers’ health with ‘biobutton’ tech
The Cayman Islands is tapping an innovative new wearable tech device to help monitor potential Covid-19 symptoms in visiting tourists.
Tourists will be asked to wear a ‘BioButton’ device which has been developed by US biotech firm BioIntelliSense.
Once the Caymans’ border reopens on 1 September travelers can wear the BioButton and self-isolate at accommodations of their choice for five days.
It is not compulsory but if they choose not to wear it, they must quarantine at a government-managed facility for 14 days, Tourism Minister Moses Kirkconnell said in a release.
The BioButton device is able to monitor a traveler’s heart rate during rest, respiratory rate and skin temperature, which helps in detecting possible Covid symptoms.
"This advanced health screening solution enhances our reopening protocols, providing further confidence that we can once again welcome visitors to our shores while minimising the risk of introducing new cases to the local community," Kirkconnell said.
It is an ‘unobtrusive’ device the size of a coin.
In addition, travelers must have proof of a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before the date of travel.
