Celebrate A Dickensian Christmas in Florida

Thursday, 21 Nov, 2019 0

Travel back to the Victorian era with Amelia Island this December. The island, situated on Florida’s North-east coast, celebrates its fifth annual Dickens on Centre festival 13th to 15th December 2019. Inspired by the famous Charles Dickens story, ‘A Christmas Carol,’ historic downtown Fernandina Beach is transformed into a classic English village, with costumed characters, themed entertainment and performances.

The Dickens on Centre event is due to the British heritage and ownership of Amelia Island in the eighteenth century. The island was named in honour of Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of Great Britain, by the Governor of Georgia, James Oglethorpe in 1735. It did not lapse into British hands until the Spanish colony of Florida was traded for British Cuba in 1763 as a result of the Treaty of Paris.

Over the three days, there will be Victorian inspired entertainment on two stages, as well as throughout the streets. Families will enjoy a plethora of fun including, new this year, St Nick’s Grotto, Tiny Tim’s Kid’s Zone, holiday shopping, festive food & drink including Fezziwig’s Courtyard, strolling carol singers and plenty of Christmas inspiration. Everyone is encouraged to wear their best Victorian clothes throughout the festival weekend which culminates on Sunday 15th December with the inaugural Dickens Costume Contest.

For adults only, Dickens After Dark takes place in the evening of 13th and 14th December at the Florida House Inn. Inspired by Dickens and his tales of the Victorian era, this event includes a ghost tour with the Amelia Island Museum of History, and speciality entertainment including aerial acrobatics. Victorian costumes are highly encouraged.
