Damage caused to Ketchikan dock in Alaska has been calculated at up to $3 million after Celebrity Cruises’ ship Infinity crashed into a pier on arrival Friday.
Repairs could take up to two months, port officials said.
The Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment is still investigating the cause but Celebrity spokesman Owen Torres cited ‘inclement weather.’
The 90,000 ton ship also took a hit with visible damage including a small hole above the water line.
That has now been repaired and the ship was cleared to depart for Vancouver, British Columbia.
With one pier out of commission for the time being, some ships will be forced to anchor offshore said City of Ketchikan Port and Harbors director Steve Corporon.
"The simple answer is that we’re going to have to have them anchor out and tender (passengers) in," Corporon said.
