Cheers! UK keeps a pint of the best

Thursday, 18 December 20083 min read

LONDON – The British pint of beer and metric mile are safe after the European Parliament shelved plans to force the UK to adopt litres and kilometres.

An indefinite opt-out has been agreed by European MPs in Strasbourg to allow the continued use of the mile for roads, the pint for draught beer, cider and bottled milk, and the ounce for precious metals.

The concession to British tradition was due to expire next year, when imperial measures faced being banished altogether from packaging, road signs and market stalls.
