Cherry blossom peak piques interest in Washington DC
If April 1 makes you think of Fools, you must not be a Washingtonian. In the nation’s capital, April means just one thing: Cherry blossoms.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival has officially opened, with events running through April 14.
This year’s festival commemorates the 101st anniversary of the gift of the cheery blossom trees by the people of Japan.
Special events include the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, on Saturday, April 6, and the Sakura Matsuri – Japanese Street Festival, produced by The Japan-America Society of Washington DC, on Saturday, April 13.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade on Saturday, April 13, marches down Constitution Avenue with entertainment, floats, and giant helium balloons.
A Hotel Program provides Festival-inspired guest packages and the Cherry Picks Restaurant Program adds cherry and spring dishes to the menus of nearly 100 restaurants. The Petal Pass Program offers discounts at local attractions and retailers.
But the real show is the trees themselves. Over a million visitors are expected to see the blossoms, whose peak bloom this year is expected between April 3 and 6.
