China launches its own digital health pass
China has launched its own digital health certificate in order to hopefully facilitate international travel.
It contains data on the user’s antibody test results and proof of vaccination and works through the WeChat messaging app, said ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.
The data is encrypted by a QR code.
It is available only to Chinese nationals at present.
China is ‘actively advancing international recognition of the health certificate’ in order for it to be recognised globally to facilitate seamless international travel
"China stands ready to discuss with other countries the establishment of mutual recognition mechanisms for health code information on the basis of accommodating each other’s concerns," Zhao said.
It is unclear if any other countries have said they will recognise it.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously proposed a globally recognised QR code system to ‘further standardise policies and establish fast tracks to facilitate the orderly flow of people.’
Several vaccine passport schemes are being developed but there is growing concern over whether any will actually be compatible with each other.
It has also been discussed by the Group of 7 nations and the EU is set to release details soon about its own proposed ‘digital green pass.’
