China to join FAA panel on Boeing 737 MAX safety

China says it will join the US Federal Aviation Administration and several other aviation safety experts from around the world to review the safety of Boeing 737 MAX.

The avaiation regulators panel will meet to discuss issues raised so far from the two crash investigations.

The Joint Authorities Technical Review meeting is being chaired by former US National Transportation Safety Board chairman Chris Hart.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China confirmed it will send experts to be part of the FAA panel and join officials from Canada, the UAE, Singapore, Australia, and EASA.

Ethiopia and Indonesia, the two countries where the crashes occurred, will also send officials.

A multi-lateral panel could be positive news for Boeing as it looks to get the aircraft back in the air.

If the different air regulators can reach a consensus on various issues, it could speed up the re-evaluation of the plane in the different jurisdictions, potentially saving months.

One of the goals of the panel is to ‘conduct a comprehensive review of the certification of the automated flight control system on the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft,’ the FAA said.

"The JATR team will evaluate aspects of the 737 MAX automated flight control system, including its design and pilots’ interaction with the system, to determine its compliance with all applicable regulations and to identify future enhancements."
