China to limit numbers of Mount Everest climbers to reduce rubbish

Chinese authorities said they will restrict when and how many climbers may scale Mount Everest each year.

As part of on-going clean-up efforts to rid the world’s highest mountain and the base camp area of trash, China will cut the number of climbers by a third to less than 300 and restrict the climbing season to spring.

China says it collected more than eight tonnes of trash last summer from the mountain and climbers have complained of discarded oxygen tanks, food canisters and plastics.

It has installed station to sort and recycle waste from the mountain.

Nepal has set up a separate waste management program on its side of the mountain.

More than 600 people reached the summit of Everest, in 2017, according to the data from the non-profit Himalayan Database, while six climbers died that year.

China’s clean-up efforts will also include retrieving bodies of climbers still resting on the mountain.
