China’s domestic tourism will swell to a $1.5 trillion market in the next five years, according to a report by the China Tourism Academy.
It forecasts domestic tourism will contribute at least 10% of China’s national economy and employment.
More than six billion domestic trips were made in 2019.
Last year tourism spending passed six trillion yuan.
The report said China had 145 million inbound tourist trips in 2019.
Following lockdowns during the first few months of the pandemic, tourism has rebounded well with hotel occupancy and airline passenger traffic almost at pre-pandemic levels.
The culture and tourism ministry said there were 637 million trips made during the recent Golden Week Holiday, which is 79% of the previous year’s total.
