An irate Chinese passenger was fined by authorities in Vietnam for an angry response to being denied a free upgrade.
Liu Jun was hit with a VND7.5 million ($330) fine for insulting and threatening behaviour to a crew member on a Vietnam Airlines flight from Beijing to Hanoi.
He reportedly shouted at, insulted and threatened to beat up the crewmember after his request for a business class seat was denied.
Liu also threatened two other passengers who attempted to calm him down.
He was detained and fined after the plane landed at Noi Bai airport in Hanoi.
As China’s outbound tourism has grown at record levels so has the frequency of air rage incidents, and other so-called ‘uncivilised acts’ such as damaging historic landmarks.
Chinese authorities has launched its own blacklist of travellers who have fallen foul of local laws and good etiquette while travelling at home and overseas.
