Chinese skip Lunar New Year holiday travel
Although most parts of China is free of Covid travel restrictions, there is little appetite from citizens to join in the annual exodus home or to take a festive holiday for Lunar New Year. In some cases people are being paid to stay at home.
China’s Ministry of Transport expects only 1.15 billion trips during the month before and after Chinese New Year break. While that sounds like a mind-boggling number, it will still be more than 60% down from 2019.
