CLIA cruise lines to test every passenger for Covid

Sunday, 06 Oct, 2020 0

Cruise lines around the world will begin testing all passengers and crew for Covid under new rules set out by CLIA.

All ocean cruise members of the trade body operating ships with a capacity of 250 or more have agreed to the measure which has been described as a ‘travel industry first’.

Anyone testing positive will not be allowed to board.

CLIA said in a statement: "CLIA ocean cruise line members worldwide have agreed to conduct 100% testing of passengers and crew on all ships with a capacity to carry 250 or more persons—with a negative test required for any embarkation.

"This is a travel industry first and an example of the cruise industry leading the way.  We see testing as an important initial step to a multi-layered approach that we believe validates the industry’s commitment to making health, safety, and the well-being of the passengers, the crew, and the communities we visit our top priority."

Carnival UK president Simon Palethorpe said: "We wholly support testing of guests for Covid 19 prior to boarding as detailed in the CLIA framework.

"We have taken advice and guidance from health and medical experts from around the globe and we are currently finalising the protocols for P&O Cruises and Cunard, which will be communicated to our guests in the coming days."

Royal Caribbean said in a statement: "We have been consistent that we will not return to sailing until we have the right protocols, and a greatly expanded knowledge of the disease, and the technology that can be used to deal with it.

"The Healthy Sail Panel, a group of experts assembled by Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., has provided a 60+ page report with over 70 detailed best practices which will be used to inform future public health guidance and preventative measures relating to travel on cruise ships- this includes testing."
