Climate Care strike deal with South American Experience
South American Experience will offset the carbon dioxide emissions from flights its sells between the UK and South America.
The operator, which tailor-makes holidays to South America, has set up an agreement with Climate Care to donate money to carbon-absorbing projects worldwide.
South American Experience travel consultant Lucy Clark told TravelMole: “Our customers tend to be the sort of travellers that are more aware of their destination. Plus there is a growing trend to be a more responsible traveller, and be aware of the damage you are doing when visiting countries in the developing world”.
Current Climate Care projects include tree planting in Uganda, construction of a hydro-electric power station in Bulgaria, and promotion of low energy light bulbs in Mauritius, which is reliant on oil as its primary energy source.
Climate Care estimates that about two and a half tonnes of carbon dioxide is emitted on flights from the UK to South America.
South American send about three and a half thousand people to South America every year. It has agreed to offset the emissions for every one of those who spends over £500 on a flight and accommodation package by donating £16 per passenger to Climate Care.
Other travel suppliers that work with Climate Care include Discovery Initiatives, Nature Trek and Green Tours. Climate Care’s Tom Morton told TravelMole that the company was in talks with other travel suppliers to set up similar relationships.
