Coach travel boosts Eurotunnel
Eurotunnel has reported a 2% increase in revenue to £268 million during the first half of 2005 as the number of coach and Eurostar passengers both increased.
The Channel Tunnel operator said almost 40,000 coaches used the service between January and June, a 34% increase on last year. The number of cars transported rose 1% to 951,500 although growth in the first quarter did not continue into the second.
“First quarter traffic benefited from the operational difficulties at the Port of Calais and the fact that Easter fell in the first quarter of 2005,” the company said in a statement.
Coaching growth also slowed in the second quarter for the same reasons.
The number of passengers travelling through the tunnel on Eurostar showed further encouraging growth of 8% to 3.67 million.
“This confirms the upward trend following the opening of the first section of the UK’s high speed line in September 2003,” the statement said.
