Coin fishing in wishing well ‘legal’

Wednesday, 8 October 20033 min read

Visitors to Rome who make a wish as they throw a few coins in the famous Trevi Fountain might wish to know that from now on, it will be perfectly legal for others to fish them out again.

As reported in recent months, there has been an ongoing dispute into who actually owns any coins left in the fountain, after the city’s beggars were found to be removing the cash at night.

But yesterday, according to The Daily Telegraph, a Rome appeals court decided that such coins are in fact public property.

The newspaper says the ruling was dependent on the case of a homeless woman who was acquitted of stealing GBP12 worth of coins from the Trevi Fountain. She had originally been fined GBP1,100 for the theft.
