Plans to build a new commuter airline terminal at Honolulu Airport has been shelved by Hawaii State Department of Transportation, citing cost.
As part of the airport’s $1.7 billion modernization project, a new terminal was planned to house commuter airlines Island Air and Mokulele Airlines.
The already delayed project has now been scrapped after all tender bids to build the terminal came in more expensive than estimated.
The lowest bid came in at $41 million, about 14% higher than the $36 million estimate.
"We plan to meet with the commuter terminal tenants to discuss alternative locations," said Ross Higashi, airports division director.
The existing commuter terminal is due to be demolished as part of the airport’s upgrade project.
