Company suspends excursions to Roatan following ‘horrific murder’
A company selling shore excursions to cruise passengers has suspended its programme in Roatan after a crew member from the Norwegian Pearl was shot dead on the Caribbean island last week.
Cruisingexcursions.com said the killing was "the latest and most shocking in a series of violent reported incidents affecting visitors to the island".
Managing director Simon Purchase said: "A string of reports of robberies, violence against visitors and now this horrific murder have forced us to suspend our cruise excursion programme on this beautiful island.
"It is such a shame and very sad for the majority of law abiding island residents, especially those who make a living from tourism but we cannot recommend cruisers go ashore until we are reassured that measures are in place to protect visitors. All forward bookings have been cancelled with full refunds."
Norwegian Cruise Line has suspended stops in Roatan following the killing, but other cruise lines are continuing to call at island off the coast of Honduras in Central America.
Cruisingexcursions.com did offer a choice of eleven excursions on Roatan ranging from traditional sightseeing trips taking in ancient fishing villages, visits to mangrove groves, iguana farms and beaches, to diving and fishing, to the more adventurous jungle zip line adventures with walks on an eco walkway suspension bridges.
