Connecticut casinos to add to convention appeal
Two Native-American gambling casinos with a host of new amenities opening in Connecticut are expected to move the Nutmeg State a notch up the convention ladder.
The $700 million MGM Grand at Foxwoods is set to open next year in Mashantucket with another 825 guest rooms and 115,000 square feet of meeting space that includes a 50,000 square foot pillar-less ballroom. With the ballroom, the largest such space in the Northeast, Foxwoods’ will have 170,000 square feet of total meeting space.
Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Wind is also set to open next summer. It will have a 34,000 square foot casino floor.
Another state advantage is that many of its cities lie along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor route.
“Amtrak offers a discount of 20 percent for 20 or more passengers when they travel together,” said Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesperson.
The trains also allow convention-goers and others to avoid often congested roadways, he adds.
