Cop on sick leave ran successful travel agency business on the side

A veteran cop on long term sick leave was convicted of employment fraud, after investigators found he had been running a successful travel agency business for years.

Nicolas Landry claimed he was suffering depression and had been on long term sick leave with full pay for about five years before the side business, which raked in millions of dollars in income, was discovered.

Landry was an investigator with the Surete du Quebec’s major crimes division before being diagnosed with depression in 2009.

His lucrative side business was discovered by a fellow police officer in 2014.

A chain of four travel agencies was registered in his partner’s name but investigators found Landry was the de-facto boss of the business, making all the major decisions and traveling around the world on business.

The travel agencies generated millions in revenue.

Landry was eventually charged with defrauding his employer and found guilty in a Montreal court.

Prosecutor Patrick Cardinal said Landry’s position as a police officer will be taken into account at sentencing.
