Corporate travel managers share average pay and bonus figures
The average corporate travel manager in the United States earned more than $100,000 in salary and bonuses in 2013.
A new survey by the Global Business Travel Association reports that the average base salary of the 465 travel buyers who responded was $93,937, up 3.6% from 2012.
In addition, 69% received a bonus; the average bonus was of $13,845.
With salaries up in the six-figure range, 63% of respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their compensation.
As might be expected, travel buyers at larger companies earned more than those at small ones. Companies with a total domestic travel spend of less than $2.5 million paid an average base salary of $76,080, while those with spend of more than $10 million paid an average of $108,749.
For the most part, travel buyers and their companies split the cost of medical insurance. Eighty-five percent contribute jointly to dental insurance and about 80% pay jointly for preferred provider organization (PPO) medical and vision insurance plans.
Nearly all of the companies offer a 401(k)/403(b) plan, and more than three out of four reimburse their travel managers for convention attendance, mileage expenses and professional association dues.
The results are based on surveys conducted by the GBTA in September 2013.
