Cosmos banks on future success of travel on mobile phones
TTI conference special report: Cosmos has not taken a single holiday booking by mobile phone according to commercial and product director Stuart Jackson.
Despite investing in a project with the Handy Group more than six months ago the operator has seen increasing enquiries on the service but no bookings.
Jackson defended the operator’s continued confidence in the potential of the mobile internet market however, describing it as a ‘huge and growing environment’.
He said: “There are parallels to the way the internet has grown and it will deliver in the coming years. I don’t believe it can be ignored but adoption is going to be more towards the end of this year and 2007.”
Jackson cited the 61.2 million mobile phone subscribers in the UK, the development of more and more internet-enabled devices and the investment by network providers as proof of the market’s potential.
“We’re seeing the volume to our service growing steadily and we see it as an investment in the future rather than a real return now.”
He also argued that Cosmos had an advantage over other players in its take-up of the technology.
“Phone operators will not be going out looking for multiple providers and we’re already there.”
