Cruise line Ponant confirmed one guest was taken off a Paul Gauguin cruise ship after testing positive for Covid-19.
French Polynesian State Services said the ship immediattely returned to its Tahiti homeport on hearing of the positive test for Covid-19 of a female US national.
All people in contact with the woman were tested and all came back negative.
All other guests and crew were later tested and results are still pending.
All guests are now isolating in their staterooms, parent company Ponant said.
The Paul Gauguin ship left Papeete last week and had been moored off Bora Bora for the past two days.
French Polynesia became the first South Pacific destination to accept travellers without a mandatory quarantine period.
All travellers arriving by air have to show proof they are Covid-19 prior to travel and then be tested again four days after arriving in Tahiti.
