Covid-hit Macau closes all casinos
Asian gambling epicentre of Macau will close all casinos and most businesses starting Monday
It largely contains people to their homes as Macau struggles to stop Covid clusters which have infected more than 1,400 since last month.
All businesses must close except for supermarkets and others facilities offering essential services.
Clusters have been found in casinos.
Macau’s iconic Grand Lisboa Hotel, was locked down last week, and has now transitioned to a quarantine hotel.
Thirteen cases of Covid were identified, locking down 500 people.
It is now being used as medical observation facilities for quarantine, the Macao Government Tourism Office said.
The Grand Lisboa will use 470 rooms for quarantine and the Grand Hyatt will add 300 quarantine rooms.
Macao’s economy is heavily dependent on casino tax revenues and employment.
