The resort island of Cozumel is expecting a record 1,300 cruise ship calls this year, according to the head of the Quintana Roo port administration authority.
That will translate to nearly five million cruise ship passengers, said Alicia Ricalde Magana.
Numbers have been steadily growing over the past three years with 1,297 cruise calls bringing 4.3 million passengers last year.
From January-April 2019, there were 550 cruise calls, a rise of 4%.
Larger ships are being deployed too, highlighting a 9% increase in passenger numbers.
It may also increase further as cruise lines scramble for alternative ports with calls to Cuba now banned.
Cozumel generates about half of all Mexican cruise calls, although Mexico is still facing several issues which could impact tourism.
Ongoing fears over tourist safety, the end of international tourism marketing and the invasion of sargassum on the Caribbean coastline may hamper further tourism growth.
