Cruise ship hits oil tanker
A cruise ship carrying nearly 500 tourists – the majority of them British – has crashed into an oil tanker in the sea off southern Spain.
The BBC News website reports that the Van Gogh, which had been chartered by the tour operator Travelscope, was on a nine-day cruise from Falmouth with 484 passengers on board.
Thick fog is being blamed for the collision, which happened as the ship sailed from Gibraltar to the Moroccan port of Tangiers.
The tanker it was in collision with, which was carrying some 140,000 tonnes of crude oil, was travelling from Egypt to a refinery in Algeceiras.
While there were no injuries, and no oil leaked out, both ships sustained damage. The Van Gogh was reportedly able to return to Gibraltar under its own power, for the damage to be assessed.
