Cruise ships diverted away from Egypt and Tunisia
Further outbreaks of violence in the Middle East and North Africa have prompted cruise lines to divert ships away from the region.
Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas cancelled Tuesday night’s scheduled overnight stop at the Egyptian port of Alexandria with stops in Messina, Sicily and Valletta in Malta.
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth also swapped a stop in Alexandria for Rhodes in Greece.
Holland America Line cancelled a call at La Goulette in Tunisia last week, stopping in Sardinia instead.
Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises and Princess Cruises said they were monitoring the situation in the region but have not altered their itineraries.
The Foreign Office is not advising against all travel to Egypt or Tunisia, but it is urging visitors to be cautious following the outbreak of violent protests against a low-budget American anti-Islamic film which have swept across the region, leading to the deaths of four Americans, including the US ambassador, in Sudan.
