The historic ocean liner the S.S. United States could be resurrected again as a cruise ship after Crystal Cruises signed a purchase option to restore the ship.
The SS United States has been out of service for 47 years and Crystal plans to turn into an 800-passenger luxury liner with 400 suites.
It plans to retain some original features of the ship, including the Promenade and Navajo Lounge.
Crystal CEO Edie Rodriguez said total costs to get it ship-shape would be in the region of $800 million.
"The prospect of revitalizing the SS United States and re-establishing her as ‘America’s Flagship’ once again is a thrilling one. It will be a very challenging undertaking, but we are determined to apply the dedication and innovation that has always been the ship’s hallmark," Rodriguez said in a statement.
"We are honored to work with the SS United States Conservancy and government agencies in exploring the technical feasibility study so we can ultimately embark on the journey of transforming her into a sophisticated luxury cruise liner for the modern era."
The ship has been docked in Philadelphia for the last 20 years and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A feasibility study on its potential seaworthiness will be carried out and is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
"We are thrilled that the S.S. United States is now poised to make a triumphant return to sea and that the ship’s historical legacy will continue to intrigue and inspire a new generation," said Susan Gibbs, executive director of the S.S. United States Conservancy, who is the granddaughter of the ship’s designer, William Francis Gibbs.
