Culinary scene in Cleveland – where banks make great restaurants

Tuesday, 15 Oct, 2019 0

Cleveland’s growing culinary scene, comprising award-winning chefs that are producing exciting and inventive dishes, extends into the financial sector with the repurposing of many bank buildings into unusual locations for restaurants.

The financial heyday of the early 20th century resulted in many elegant and stately bank buildings which continue to be taken over by visionary chefs. The original Guardian Bank and Trust is now home to the Marble Room Steakhouse & Raw Bar, with a lofted wine cellar, grand marble staircases and a 3,500 square foot vault in the basement for private events.

Crop Bistro, which was one of the first restaurants to call a former bank its home, is in the grandiose lobby of the United Bank Building, a 1925 Beaux-Arts structure in the Ohio City neighbourhood. Vault in the Metropolitan at the 9 hotel serves craft cocktails and oysters in the century-old vaults of the Cleveland Trust Company, where four separate vault spaces have been decked out in 1920s era décor.

Customers at Heinen’s Fine Foods can sample wines from a self-serve, electronic tap system located under the Tiffany-style stained glass rotunda of the Cleveland Trust Company Building.

Ohio City Galley is a new food hall and restaurant in the former Forest City Trust building. It aims to cultivate and accelerate aspiring restaurateurs by providing a forum to showcase their capabilities.

Touch Supper Club is sited in a 1920s bank and the former vault provides the backdrop to the DJ area.

The food offerings in the city reflect the diversity of more than 200 years of migration of over 100 ethnic groups. Traditional dishes run alongside modern takes on old world classics. From the Italian butchers and Jewish delis of its ethnic East Side to the New Midwest, farm-to-table innovations of its West Side and beautiful eateries in local hotels, the city is home to culinary riches of all kinds.
